Volkswagen has started taking orders in the UK for its one and only vehicle that bagged two prestigious awards, the European Car of The Year 2013 and World Car of the Year. Yes we are talking about the all electric hatchback from the German major, the Volkswagen e-Golf.
Come March 11, Volkswagen will start taking orders for the fully electric hatch and customers will be able to order the car from any of the 24 Volkswagen EV Retailers across the United Kingdom. Customers can expect the deliveries to start at the end of June 2014.
Based on the award winning Volkswagen Golf, the e-Golf offers the same dynamics, practicality and advanced technologies but with the added benefits of an electric powertrain. The car come with a charging cable that can charge it from a household 3-pin socket. It takes close to 13 hours when a standard UK 230 volt, 2.3 kW supply is used. Customers can also go for an optional wallbox which provides a 3.6 kW supply and charges the battery to full in 8 hours.
With the use of a a DC supply and the car’s combined charging system (CCS), the battery can be recharged to nearly 80 percent within 35 minutes which is amazing.
Powering the car is an AC electric motor which produces 115 PS of power and peak torque of 270 Nm. It transmits the power to the front of wheels of the e-Golf via a single speed gearbox. Volkswagen has installed the 318 kg lithium ion battery into the car’s floors. All the 264 cells that the battery contains are rated at 390 Volts and 26.5 kWh.
As far as the performance is concerned, the car can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 10.4 seconds and achieve a top speed of 87 mph. The car offers a complete range of up to 118 miles, depending on the ambient conditions, charge level and driving style. The car can be driven in two economy modes: Eco and Eco+.
Volkswagen e-Golf is priced at £25,845 on road. This includes £5,000 Government grant which, if not applicable, takes the cost to £30,845.
