Volkswagen is going to debut the all new Volkswagen Golf GTE plug-in hybrid hatchback in the UK. Coming week, the Golf GTE will be unveiled to the visitors at the 2014 Gadget Show Live that will be happening at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham.
Along with the new plug-in hybrid hatchback model, Volkswagen will also be showcasing the very best of its the lineup – the Volkswagen XL1 and e-UP. Not only that, Volkswagen will also be allowing interested visitors to take the fully electric e-UP for accompanied test drives.
Talking about the GTE now, Volkswagen claims the new model is as efficient as an electric car and yet offers the dynamics of a Golf GTI. The GTE made its global debut at last month’s Geneva Motor Show and received an appreciable response at that time. Under the hood of the Golf GTE is a combined powertrain that uses a 1.4-litre TSI direct-injection petrol engine and an electric motor. The internal combustion engine produces 150 PS while the electric motor contributes another 102 PS, taking the complete output to 204 PS. The combined peak torque offered by the duo is 350 Nm.
Using the decently powerful powertrain, the Golf GTE can sprint from 0 to 62 mph in just 7.6 seconds and achieve a top speed of 138 mph. On electric power alone, the car can hit 81 mph which is quite good. Coming to the most important of all, fuel efficiency, the Golf GTE returns 188 mpg on a combined cycle and emits nearly 35 g/km of CO2.
The treatment given to the external of the Golf GTE is influenced from the Golf GTI and e-Golf. It features C-shaped LED daytime running lights, horizontal aerodynamic fins, blue accents in the headlights and on the grille and more. The GTE also features an e-manager which lets owners preset the interior cooling or heating and even vehicle charging. The e-manager can also be operated via a smartphone using the Car-Net app.
