RAV4 Electric Vehicle from Toyota was presented at the 26th Electric Vehicle Symposium in Los Angeles. It possesses an electric engine developed by Tesla Motors and will be seen in dealer showrooms from summer of 2012 at a price of $49,800. The electric battery is low mounted at the centre of the vehicle and offers a maximum output of 154 horsepower.
Toyota RAV4 electric SUV is offered as a front wheel drive only and drivers can choose from drive modes of Sport and Normal. Sport mode offers acceleration of 0 to 60 miles per hour in 7.0 seconds and a maximum speed of 100 miles per hour.
While in Normal mode the SUV can sprint form 0 to 60 miles per hour in 8.6 seconds with a maximum speed of 85 miles per hour. Toyota RAV4 EV has a driving range of 100 miles and charging time of 6 hours with a 240V/40A charger while its battery has a warranty of 8 years or 100,000 miles. Toyota aims to sell just 2,600 units of RAV4 EV over the next three years.
Exterior features would include a restyled bumper, upper and lower grille, side mirrors, rear spoiler and underbody design. LED daytime lights and new exterior signature blue emblems are also added. The SUV will be built at the Tesla production plant in Palo Alto, California while it will be assembled into an RAV4 at the Toyota Canada plant.
Where the car does well is in its interiors where you can see Neutron fabric on seats and door trims, a redesigned instrument panel and an 8″ touch screen offering navigation, telematics, electric vehicle drive instructions and settings.
