Prokhorov’s Yo-Auto pitches CNG-hybrid 2012

  Prokhorov City Car Natural Gas Hybrid Vehicle Design Prototype Yo-Auto, the hybrid-vehicle maker launched in part by Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov, is pitching a crossover hybrid that can run on both gasoline and compressed natural gas (CNG) and can get about 65 miles per gallon. The company, which is owned by Prokhorov’s Onexim Group and Russia-based truckmaker Yarovit, is also investing in a second assembly line at its St. Petersburg plant to double production capacity, HybridCars.com reported, citing a press conference held by Prokhorov in Russia.

Gasoline vehicles soon to be overtaken by CNG, diesel in India

At a time when gasoline prices frequently fluctuate, cheap compressed natural gas (CNG) and diesel have started to climb the fuel-of-choice charts over in India. According to The Times of India, CNG is so hot that it will soon overtake gasoline as the fuel that powers the majority of vehicles in India. Of course, CNG’s rise to the top is not related to saving the environment but to the fact that it’s far cheaper than gasoline. The Times of India reports that a growing number of vehicle owners convert their gas-fueled automobiles into CNG-burnin’ machines out of necessity to save a couple of dollars per fill up.

Automakers have taken note of this trend towards CNG and diesel in India and have responded by flooding the nation with small vehicles – including India’s most fuel-efficient sedan, the 54-mpg diesel-sipping Tata Indigo e-CS – that burn the now-popular alternative fuels.

2012 Green Car of the Year winner is the Honda Civic Natural Gas

The 2012 Green Car of the Year award was snagged from the electric and diesel jaws of its competitors by the Honda Civic Natural Gas. In a year full of standard gasoline powertrain alternatives, the Civic beat out the Ford Focus Electric, Mitsubishi i, Toyota Prius V and the Volkswagen Passat TDI. Green Car Journal hands out the award and its rules state that the GCOTY needs to have a “quantifiable environmental achievement,” market significance and “newness.” Any car that has these clearly defined features and is available for sale by January 1, 2012 can be a nominee, and the list of finalists is whittled down by GCJ editors and selected industry and environmental experts.

Volkswagen Up! five-door hits the patent office

Images of a five-door version of the Volkswagen Up! have surfaced courtesy of a European patent office. The German automaker confirmed a five-door version of the pint-sized vehicle was headed to market, and Volkswagen even went so far as to show off the Cross Up! Concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Judging by the patent photo, the production version of the five-door Up! will stick fairly close to the concept and will ride on a similarly tall suspension. That should give the vehicle more of a mini crossover appearance instead of a small hatchback.

Information on drivetrain options is suitably scarce at the moment, but we expect the five-door Up! to roll off of the production line with the same engines as its shorter three-door kin. AT&T orders 1,200 compressed natural gas Chevrolet Express Vans from GM

ATT Orders 1,200 CNG-powered Chevrolet Express Vans  – 2012-01-30 CNG-powered Chevrolet Express Vans DETROIT – ATT plans to take delivery of 1,200 Chevrolet Express compressed natural gas (CNG) dedicated cargo vans to be deployed to ATT service centers nationwide. It is the largest-ever order of CNG vehicles from General Motors. ATT, which has announced its intention to invest up to $565 million to deploy approximately 15,000 alternative fuel vehicles over a 10-year period through 2018, will use the vans to provide and maintain communications, high-speed Internet and television services for ATT customers.

Last week, the company announced the milestone deployment of its 5,000th alternative-fuel vehicle, a Chevrolet Express van, as part of the commitment. “CNG technology is important to ATT because it helps us reduce our fleet-based carbon emissions,” said Jerome Webber, ATT vice president of Fleet Operations. “It is also cost-effective and readily available in our country right now.”

Toyota will boost production of Prius compact to meet high demand

Toyota will increase the production rate of its new compact version of its Prius hybrid in order to meet Japanese demand that may be 10 times that of its current supply, Green Car Congress reports, citing the Japan-based publication Nikkei. The world’s biggest maker of hybrids will increase production capacity for the Aqua – known as the Prius C in the U.S. – within the next three months, the website said, citing a Nikkei interview with Toyota Senior Managing Officer Takeshi Shirane. The executive said that Toyota may produce the Aqua at Central Motor’s factory in Miyagi Prefecture.

Central Motor is one of three companies being merged into Toyota Motor East Japan Inc. this summer. Earlier this month, Hybrid Cars, again citing the Nikkei, reported that Toyota received about 120,000 orders for the Aqua from Dec. 26 – 31, the first days the car was available to the Japanese public.

Paice drags Hyundai, Kia into long-running hybrid patent fight with Toyota

With all the news coming out recently about the small claims lawsuit over the Honda Civic Hybrid, readers may have forgotten the name behind a long-running legal issue over Toyota’s hybrid system: Paice. The latest development is that Paice and the Abell Foundation (an investor in Paice) have sued Hyundai and Kia over the gas-electric technology used in the Optima and Sonata hybrids (pictured), which shares some parts with Paice says infringes its patents, just as it says Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive does.

Newt Gingrich: You cannot put a gun rack in a Chevy Volt -UPDATE

Looks like Newt Gingrich is getting into the right-wing, let’s-all-hate-on-the-Chevrolet-Volt bandwagon. During a campaign stop at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, OK, the trailing Republican candidate said, “Let me start from a simple premise that Oklahomans will understand: you cannot put a gun rack in a Volt,” Talking Points Memo reports. It appears that Gingrich is trying out a new attack line, as Raw Story is reporting that he used a similar line at an event in Suwanee, GA.

There, he continued, “There is no reason not to believe that we couldn’t stabilize with American production by drowning demand in supply the old-fashioned, free market way. Think of the name Dartz and, if you’re up on your whale foreskin-upholstered SUVs, you’ll invariably arrive at the Prombron. But while glad to furnish Eastern European mobsters with the machine that makes the Hummer look like a beauty queen, Dartz is keen to break out of the Prombron’s mold with sleeker offerings. That’s what led to the design of the chopped-down Nagel sedan and, more recently, to the Mojo roadster. Now Dartz has followed up with another design it calls the Jo-MoJo.

As promised, the Jo-Mojo is an electric roadster. Designed, like other Dartz concepts, by Eduard Gray, the Jo-Mojo packs an 80-horsepower electric motor that can be recharged (over who knows how long a timeframe) by a retractable solar panel that encloses the cockpit when parked and acts as the only roof to speak of.
