Shelby is the word synonymous to performance and the one car that actually put Shelby ahead of other manufacturers in the 60s is the Cobra. That iconic piece of machinery would give any car enthusiast goose bumps. The original Cobra was exciting and immensely powerful, and talked only performance.
In 1964, Shelby American, which is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Carroll Shelby International Inc. (CSBI:PK), launched the FIA Cobra. This special version competed with Aston Martin, Jaguar and Corvette in 1964’s World Manufacturers Championship series.
Exactly fifty years later, in 2014, celebrating the birth of the FIA Cobra and paying a tribute to the same, Shelby American is going to offer 50 limited edition continuation (CSX7000) Shelby 289 FIA Cobras. Based on the 289 Ford, the limited edition models will feature a “Viking Blue” exterior color with FIA stripes and roundels. It will also come with a black FIA interior, special billet anniversary badges, original style wheels and a range of additional features.
The limited edition 50th Anniversary FIA Shelby Cobra will be introduced on Friday, Jan. 17, 2014, at the annual Barrett-Jackson Auction in Scottsdale, Ariz.
“The 289 FIA Shelby Cobras were among the most important cars in American racing history,” said John Luft, president of Shelby American. “The FIA Cobras built during that period were piloted by racing legends including Ken Miles, Dan Gurney, Phil Hill and Bob Bondurant. Thus, some of the most revered drivers in the sport put the 289 FIA Cobra into the winner’s circle. Combining a robust, powerful American engine with a lightweight chassis was sheer brilliance. Shelby’s formula still resonates today and is followed by automakers worldwide.”
50 years back, the 289 FIA Cobras were built with the 289 Ford as their base, but featured a number of modifications such as a new dash, widened front and rear fenders, cut-back doors, new dampers, racing wheels with pin-drive hub, oil cooler scoops and a racing-spec 289 small block engine.
The CSX7000 Continuation Shelby Cobra 289 FIA is essentially a component vehicle that any customer or automotive professional can work on and fit a powertrain of his/her choice. The CSX7000 is specially built on orders and delivered with a Shelby issued MSO.
Compared to the original car, the special edition models will retain most of the characteristic features including the body lines and suspension, but will be built in accordance with modern-day standards. These include a set of modern disc brakes, either aluminum or fiberglass bodies and a stronger frame. The limited editions also feature a special fitted car cover, detachable steering wheel, and an Ford V8 exhaust system.
As far as the pricing goes, the limited edition FIA Cobra with a fiberglass body will cost $94,995, while the aluminum body model will cost $159,995.
