Porsche Macan Unveiled In LA: Complete Details and Price

Porsche has launched its latest car, the Porsche Macan, at the Los Angeles Auto Show and it happens to be the sixth model of Porsche range. With the Macan, Porsche plans to aim at a completely new segment of the market. Porsche claims the Macam is not just a compact SUV but a sports car as well, meaning it is a true Porsche at core which is ready to take on the Range Rover Evoque, Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Merc’s GLK.

From launch the Macan will be available in three versions, which come packed with features like Porsche Traction Management (PTM) active all-wheel drive and the Porsche PDK double-clutch transmission fitted as standard. Talking about the engine options, first up is the Macan S which is powered by a 3.0-litre V6 bi-turbo engine that delivers 340 hp (250 kW), powerful enough to accelerate the car from 0 to 62 mph in 5.2 seconds, and return up to 32.5 mpg (NEDC). The next he Macan Turbo which produces 400 hp (294 kW) from its 3.6-litre V6 bi-turbo engine, helping the car accelerate to 62 mph in 4.8 seconds, and return up to 31.7 mpg (NEDC). Lastly, there is the Macan S Diesel which is powered by a turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine and 258 hp (190 kW), with a 0 to 62 mph acceleration time of 6.3 seconds and an average fuel consumption of 46.3 mpg (NEDC).

Beside the three versions, Porsche has also planned some low cost Macan versions powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre in-line four-cylinder petrol unit with 294 hp, and a 175 hp turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder common rail diesel engine.

All the three models feature a seven speed dual clutch gearbox steering wheel mounted shift paddles, a permanent all wheel drive system, automatic stop/start system, brake energy recuperation and thermal management functions for fuel efficiency.

Under the skin the Macan is based around the same platform as the five year old Audi Q5. Both the cars share the same high strength steel floorpan, bulk heads and body structure along with various driveline, chassis and electrical components. The exterior of the car is dominated by massive air ducts, a clamshell bonnet which is claimed to provide improved airflow to the engine bay compared to a conventional bonnet, an aggressively angled windscreen, sloping roofline, heavily angled rear window and door mounted exterior rear view mirrors.

In addition to the above mentioned exterior highlights Porsche has also implemented some recent aerodynamic developments such as so-called radiator shutters which are positioned behind the central front air duct and close at high speeds whenever the engine management system permits to do so. And there is a flat undertray extending from front to rear which smoothens airflow underneath the body.

Proportion wise the Macan is 4699mm in length, 1923mm in width and 1624mm in height, making it 146mm shorter, 16mm narrower and 82mm lower than the second-generation Cayenne. It has a wheelbase of 2807mm.

The Macan uses electronically-controlled PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management) adjustable shock absorber system which constantly and actively alters the damper force on the front and rear axles, ensuring optimum driving pleasure, safety and comfort. The PASM, depending on the driver’s preferences and requirements, can be set into three different modes: ‘Comfort’, ‘Sport’ and ‘Sport Plus’. Other driving aids include stability control, an automatic brake differential and anti slip management. An optional Air Suspension is also available that allows the ride height to be adjusted by up to 40 mm at the press of a button for improved off-road performance.

For better steering response and best possible traction, Porsche has fitted the Macan with different sized wheels. The Macan S and Macan S Diesel come with standard 18-inch wheels wrapped in 235/60 front and 255/55 rear tyres while the Macan Turbo rolls on 19-inch wheels with 235/55 front and 255/50 rear tyres.

Porsche has started taking orders for Macan and it is set to arrive the dealerships across UK and Ireland in April 2014, followed by other global markets.
