There are a handful of car manufacturers who focus more on other important achievements than just six to seven figure yearly sales. One of them is French major Peugeot, who has recently set a new benchmark with its all new Peugeot 308. Peugeot 308, which was recently awarded the European Car Of the Year 2014, has received the new 1.2 Liter PureTech turbocharged petrol engine, completing the engines range.
The good news for potential 308 buyers is that Peugeot has managed to achieve a record 99.1 mpg and a full fuel tank range of 1124.7 miles with the PureTech powered model. These figures were achieved at the Almeria circuit in Spain and to witness the record-setting run was the Union Technique de l’Automobile, Motocycle et Cycle a.k.a UTAC.
As mentioned above, the record setter 308 model was powered by the new PureTech 1.2 liter e-THP turbocharged petrol engine that produces a decent 130 hp. Equipped with a 6 speed manual gearbox, the car was driven for more than 32 hours in order to empty its 51.4 liter fuel tank, thus returning a brilliant 99.1 miles to a gallon.
Another interesting fact is that the model used on the circuit was completely standard and was not uptuned in any way, making the Peugeot 308 1.2 liter THP 130 to be the segment leader in terms of fuel efficiency. Helping the engine to deliver such level of performance are a handful of technologies, including a new generation high performance turbocharger and high-pressure direct injection.
Even in the diesel category the car sets a difficult to surpass benchmark with its BlueHDi 1.6-litre diesel engine. The engine is rated at 120 hp and returns a combined fuel economy of 91.1 mpg and emits just 82 g/km of CO2.
The 2014 Peugeot 308 is available with a choice of five diesel engines and five petrol engines.
