Mazda has unveiled a new Mazda MX-5 Miata 25th Anniversary Edition roadster at the 2014 New York International Auto Show. The special edition model has been developed to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Mazda MX-5. Alongside the special edition, Mazda also revealed the all-new SKYACTIV-Chassis that underpins the new generation MX-5.
Launched back in 1989, the MX-5 has been a consistent performer and has countless fans across some of the major markets. It is lightweight, fun to drive and more affordable than other cars of same category. The level of success of the MX-5 is underlined by the 940,000 units Mazda has produced till date. Also, the MX-5 holds the Guinness World Record for the best selling two-seater roadster.
Powering the anniversary edition is the 2.0-litre engine that puts out 160 PS and can be mated either to a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission. The exterior is painted exclusively in Soul Red Metallic, while the retractable hard top, door mirror housings and A-pillars are covered in Brilliant Black. Piano Black has been used for the hand-finished dashboard. The seats feature off-white leather upholstery and the same has been used for the door trim. The anniversary edition rolls on 7-inch Dark Gunmetal alloy wheels and equips Bilstein dampers.
Coming to the all new SKYACTIV-Chassis now, it will used on the next gen MX-5, making it the first rear-wheel-drive, front-midship-engine layout car to feature the SKYACTIV technology. Thanks to the new chassis, the new MX-5 is 100kg lighter, has a lowered center of gravity and has a repositioned engine which is now closer to the center of the vehicle.
