Shenzhen BYD Daimler New Technology, a joint venture between Daimler and BYD has unveiled their first production vehicle at the 2014 Beijing Motor Show. Christened Denza, the all new electric vehicle shows off a perfect blend of Daimler’s expertise in safety technologies and BYD’s advancements in battery technology. The Denza is China’s first all-electric vehicle and is expected to go on sale in September 2014. Pricing will start from RMB 369,000.
According to the creators of the car, it is the result of four years of research and development and finally the found the correct formulae for an electric urban commuter. Denza has been intensively tested for 18 months and covered 1.2 million km across China with over 20 cars being crashed for safety tests. As per Daimler, the car is the first one to be tested under the C-NCAP (China New Car Assessment Program) consumer ratings and earns a 5-star rating.
Under the hood of the vehicle is an electric motor that puts out 115 hp of power and peak torque of 290 Nm. Powering the electric motor is a 47.5 kWh lithium ion phosphate battery that offers a full charge range of 300 km and a top speed of 150 km/h. The battery can be charged from any domestic power sources, dedicated charging boxers or public charge points. Depending on the source of power, the battery takes from less than hour to seven hours for a complete charge.
Denza equips a Power Flow Management System that continuously monitors the electrical system of the car and automatically disconnects the battery should there be any accident. This would completely avoid the situation from getting worse. Also, for safety purposes, the battery has been installed underneath the body in a lightweight aluminum housing.
There will be two trim levels on the Denza: Lifestyle and Executive. The Lifestyle model will feature 18” light alloy wheels, an 8” multimedia touchscreen and leather seats, while the top of the line Executive model will come with Xenon Lights featuring adaptive front lighting system, Harman-Kardon-Sound system and a navigation system.
