Targeting at the world’s biggest auto market China, Citroen has followed a unique strategy by introducing its DS nameplate as a standalone brand. A few months ago, Citroen introduced the first car under the DS brand called the 2014 Citroen DS 5LS. This compact sedan is based on the stretched version of the PF2 platform which currently supports the DS4.
Today, Citroen has unveiled the next DS product which essentially is a performance version of the 5LS. The concept model has been named DS 5LS R and is all set to make its debut at the upcoming Beijing Motor Show. Citroen says it has been pushing boundaries in innovation, design and performance lately, and the DS 5LS R is one such example.
After years of learning from the World Rally Championship, Citroen has used all its knowledge to develop the new concept. It is powered by a 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine that churns out a max of 300 hp and peak torque of 400 Nm. Compared to the sedan version, the 5LS R features wider front tracks and a lowered stance by 15 mm. It also gets a sequential transmission which can be controlled by steering wheel mounted shift paddles.
Coming to the design of the concept, it retains the bold appeal that the 5LS offers. The element of sportiness comes from features like an anodized Carmine Red exterior paint with a metallic finish in matte, carbon gray side stripes, ‘R’ signature touches on the bonnet, sides and the rear. Other highlights include a carbon gray dark chrome DS Wings grille, carbon-colored 20-inch wheels, aluminum accents, and Carmine Red touches.
The cabin of the concept is exceptionally well built and pleasing, thanks to the extensive use of Alcantara and leather. The interior features a three-fabric upholstery that uses Alcantara, DS-embossed leather and aniline full-grain leather. To add a touch of exclusivity, the dashboard, seats, central armrest and upper door panels feature Carmine Red pearl top-stitching. Citroen has also used plenty of real carbon fiber inserts on various components of the cabin.
