All New Volkswagen Golf R Unveiled At Detroit Motor Show 2014

Volkswagen’s booth at the North American International Motor Show had a large number of visitors this year and the sole reason for was the all new Volkswagen Golf R. This is the all new hatch of the Golf family and happens to be the most powerful Golf ever developed.

Yes it is true. The 2014 Volkswagen Golf R is the most powerful Golf yet and features a range of improvements over the 2013 Golf R. Powering the 2014 Golf R is an improved EA888 four-cylinder turbocharged engine featuring direct-injection. This 2.0 liter TSI unit produces an estimated 290 hp at 5500 rpm, a 34 hp boost over its predecessor, and 280 pound-feet of max torque available between 1800 rpm and 5500 rpm. The improvements made in terms of power and torque are courtesy of water-cooled exhaust gas channels, dual injection system with direct and multi-port injection, fully-electronic coolant control system and few other enhancements.

The powerful TSI engine is mated with a six speed manual gearbox as standard, and together they help the car complete the 62 mph sprint in 5.3 seconds, nearly 0.4 seconds faster than the 2013 Golf R. A six-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission is also available which offers an improved 0 to 2 mph sprint time of 4.9 seconds.

Just like its predecessor, the 2014 Golf R receives power and torque on all four wheels. This permanent all wheel drive system is called 4MOTION and Volkswagen has improved it for the new Golf R and features fifth-generation Haldex coupling. Apart from a powerful engine and revised all wheel drive system, the Golf R equips a new sport suspension, the “progressive” variable-ratio steering system, a stability control system, and optional DCC dynamic chassis control system.

The standard features list is long enough to make you like the all new Golf R. It comes with 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, standard Bi-Xenon headlights with newly designed LED daytime running lights, unique bumpers, side skirts, a two-branch exhaust system with four chrome tips and more. The cabin gets a leather-wrapped three-spoke sport steering wheel, sport seats with leather seating surfaces, ambient lighting, and R-specific instrumentation.
