Talk about Volkswagen and the first model that crosses your mind is the Golf. This iconic hatchback has been in existence for years and is only getting better and better. At the 2014 North American International Auto Show, the German automaker is going to debut the all new Golf R hatch.
The 2014 Golf R is the most powerful version of the Golf ever developed for the North American market and arrives with a host of new things every potential buyer will consider. Compared to the 2013 Golf R, the 2014 model is going to be 34 hp more powerful yet more fuel efficient. As per Volkswagen, the 2014 Golf R delivers an estimated highway fuel economy rating of 31 mpg, a 4 mpg improvement over its predecessor.
The new Golf R is powered by an improved version of the EA888 four-cylinder turbocharged and direct-injection TSI 2.0-liter engine that powers the new Golf GTI. The same now produces an estimated 290 hp at 5500 rpm and 280 pound-feet of max torque available between 1800 rpm and 5500 rpm. To achieve such a power bump, Volkswagen engineers enhanced the GTI’s engine with water-cooled exhaust gas channels, dual injection system with direct and multi-port injection, fully-electronic coolant control system etc.
The powerful engine is mated to a six speed manual gearbox which helps the Golf R sprint from zero to 62 mph in 5.3 seconds, a 0.4 seconds improvement over the 2013 model. The same car when fitted with the six-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission completes the sprint in 4.9 seconds.
Alike previous generation Golf R models, the 2014 Golf R transfers all that power and torque to the road via a permanent all-wheel-drive system. Called 4MOTION system, this is the latest version of the all wheel drive system and features a fifth-generation Haldex coupling. Complimenting the powerful engine and updated all wheel drive system is a new sport suspension, the “progressive” variable-ratio steering system and a stability control system. The car will also be available with an optional DCC dynamic chassis control system.
Talking about the exterior of this car, I must say it looks even better now. There is a long list of exclusive features like unique bumpers, side skirts, 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, standard Bi-Xenon headlights with newly designed LED daytime running lights, a two-branch exhaust system with four chrome tips. Moving on to the interior, again the Golf R leaves you spellbound with sport seats with leather seating surfaces, a leather-wrapped three-spoke sport steering wheel, ambient lighting, and R-specific instrumentation.
Volkswagen will launch the 2014 Golf R in the US in the first quarter of 2015 only in four-door version.
