Expanding the company’s entry level, 2-Series’ lineup, BMW has unveiled the all new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer. And this is the first time when BMW has added front wheel drive and smaller, 3-cylinder engines to the model lineup.
In terms of proportion, the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer is 4,342 mm in length, 1,800 mm in width and 1,555 mm in height. The exterior of the new model is elegant enough, thanks to L-shaped rear lights, crisp contours, short overhangs, attractive swage lines and a long wheelbase.
While the exterior looks relatively compact yet stylish, the car offers appreciable amount of leg room and cargo space. At the rear of the cabin is 40:20:40 split-folding seats that can enlarge the luggage compartment capacity from 468 to 1,510 litres. Access to the luggage area is allowed by a push button, automatic opening and closing tailgate.
Perhaps, the most important addition is two new engines. BMW has introduced 3-cylinder petrol engine and 4-cylinder diesel engine. The all new 3 cylinder petrol is an innovation in itself and features technologies like turbocharging, direct petrol injection and double-Vanos variable camshaft timing. It powers the new BMW 218i Active Tourer and produces 136 hp of power and peak torque of 220Nm available from 1,250 rpm up to 4,300 rpm. The 218i emits only 115 g/km of CO2.
The other trim, the BMW 218d Active Tourer is powered by an all new 4 cylinder diesel engine that is capable of putting out 150 hp of power and peak torque of 330 Nm, while emitting 109g/km of CO2. The petrol model will be available with a newly developed six-speed manual unit, and can also be ordered with an optional six-speed automatic transmission. As for the diesel model, BMW will offer a new eight-speed automatic transmission.
The new model will come with a host of new features including new Pedestrian Warning with City Braking function, optional full colour Head-Up Display, new Parking Assistant, an electromechanical steering system, efficient bi-LED lights, and more.
For the UK, BMW will offer other trim levels as well. These include BMW 220i, 216d, 220d and 220d xDrive Active Tourer, along with a high performance BMW 225i xDrive model that goes on sale in November this year.
