Mercedes Benz showcased its latest compact SUV, the GLA Class, last year at the Frankfurt Motor Show and is now readying the car for deliveries, as the same is scheduled to start this year.
First things first, the GLA Class is reminiscent of the all new A-Class or should I say the GLA is a high riding A-Class but since it is an SUV, it comes with a more muscular styling, bigger alloy wheels, roof rails, dual exhaust configuration, rear spoiler and some other SUV specific features. Proportion wise the car is 4417mm long, 1804mm wide and 1,494mm tall and has a drag coefficient of 0.29.
The standard cargo space that the crossover offers is around 421 liters but customers can fold the rear seats down to increase it to 836 liters. For those who are still not satisfied with the default amount of space, Mercedes Benz is offering an optional Load Compartment package which boosts the cargo space by 60 liters without having to fold the rear seats.
The interior styling is unfortunately identical to what is seen on the A-Class but is top notch. There is a two-section dashboard with five round air vents which are available with optional bezels around them, a three-spoke steering wheel with 12 function keys, high quality sports seats, wide choice of seat upholsteries, galvanised surrounds and much more.
Setting new standards in this category the GLA can return up to 65 mpg. The power range constitutes of 1.6 liter and 2.0 liter petrol engines fitted in the GLA 200 and GLA 250 respectively. The GLA 200 puts out 156 hp while the GLA 250 produces 211 hp. The GLA 250 with 4MATIC can sprint from 0 to 62 mph in 6.5 seconds, attain a top speed of 145 mph and return a decent 39.7 mpg.
The diesel lineup comprises of the GLA 200 CDI which is powered by a 2.2 liter engine that develops 136 hp and 300 Nm of torque. The same can achieve 65 mpg while emitting 114 g/km of CO2. The GLA 220 CDI is again powered by a 2.2 liter engine but produces 170 hp and 350 Nm. All the engines feature start/stop technology and come with two transmission options: a six-speed manual transmission and the 7G-DCT dual clutch automatic transmission.
Some of the feature highlights include:
- 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission
- Electromechanical power steering
- COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST
- ATTENTION ASSIST
- Chrome roof rails
- 18” 5-twin-spoke wheels
- Ambient lighting
Optional features include new-generation 4MATIC all-wheel drive, power liftgate, Blind Spot Assist, DISTRONIC PLUS, Lane Keeping Assist, PARKTRONIC w/Park Assist, Panorama Sunroof and Sport Package.
