For the model year 2013, Honda has thoroughly updated its CR-Z Hybrid coupe and without wasting anymore let us jump to the improvements made from Honda’s end. In the 2014 CR-Z Sport Hybrid coupe potential buyers will get a more powerful battery pack, increased power and styling improvements, alongside getting rated as one of the safest cars in its category by Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
The CR-Z features Honda’s highly efficient, compact Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) hybrid system that returns an EPA rated mileage of 31/38/34 mpg (city/highway/combined) for the manual transmission model and 36/39/37 mpg (city/highway/combined) for the CVT model. The car is also rated as an Advanced Technology-Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (AT-PZEV) in states that follow California Air Resource Board (CARB) ZEV standards.
The 2014 CR-Z Sport hybrid is powered by a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder, 16-valve, single-overhead cam (SOHC) engine featuring “intelligent” Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (i-VTEC) that channels additional power from the Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system’s DC brushless electric motor. This 15kW electric motor is powered by a 144-volt Lithium-Ion battery pack which not only provides additional thrust during acceleration but also acts as a generator during braking and coasting to recharge the battery. The combustion engine and electric motor deliver a combined output of 130 bhp at 6000 rpm and 140lb-ft of torque.
Based on different economy and performance balance, there are three modes the driver can switch between: Econ, Normal and Sport. In addition to that, the standard Plus Sport System installed offers increased acceleration at the push of the ‘S+’ button located on the steering wheel. Coming to the exterior now, CR-Z’s refreshed design forms a strong forward stance and gives enough road presence. The top end CR-Z EX model gets LED daytime running lights (DRL), High-Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights with Auto-On/Off, and fog lights.
On the inside, the ultra modern design is complemented by a host of standard features including a 160-watt AM/FM/CD audio system with six speakers and speed-sensitive volume control, a CD/MP3 text readout and a USB auxiliary input jack for connection to a portable audio player, Bluetooth HandsFreeLink, automatic climate control, cruise control and a rearview camera. Top end CR-Z EX features a 360-Watt AM/FM/CD Premium Audio System with seven speakers including subwoofer, perforated leather-wrapped steering wheel, a Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System featuring a 6.5-inch screen and rearview camera display, FM traffic and voice recognition, Pandora Interface, Bluetooth streaming audio and an SMS text messaging function.
Safety job is taken up by Honda’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure, while additional safety is provided by dual-stage, multiple-threshold front airbags, standard front-side airbags with passenger-side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS), side-curtain airbags, active head restraints, an anti-lock braking system (ABS) and a tire pressure monitoring system.
