Joan “Nani” Roma, the Monster Energy X-raid Team driver has won the 2014 Dakar Rally in the yellow MINI ALL4 Racing. Yes it is true, Nani finished the toughest rally challenge in the world nearly five and a half minutes ahead of his teammate Stéphane Peterhansel (FR) who was in the black MINI ALL4 Racing car. While these two drivers finished first, Nasser Al-Attiyah finished third in his third white MINI ALL4 Racing car.
After a long wait, Spanish driver Joan “Nani” Roma has finally won the Dakar Rally in a car. Earlier in 2004, the Spaniard had won the event on the motorbike. Roma said, “I’m so relieved and happy. It was my big goal to win the Dakar not only on a motorbike but also in a car. A dream came true for me and I want to thank everybody at X-raid and MINI for their great work!”
For nine days, Roma had been leading the overall classification at this year’s event, with 1st place in two stages. He said in continuation, “The MINI ALL4 Racing is a brilliant car and was extremely reliable and quick throughout the whole rally. It was fun to drive! Also a big thank you to my co-driver Michel Périn, who was a great navigator again! A great result for MINI, now it’s time to celebrate!”
This year’s Dakar Rally was one of the toughest of all time. The 9,374 km-long route started from Rosario (AR) and culminated in Valparaíso (CL) at the Pacific coast covering Atacama desert. Drivers had a tough time driving on a lot of different soils and in excruciating weather conditions – extremely fine sand in the hot Atacama desert and gravel in the Andes. MINI won 11 of the 13 stages, making it the third win in a row since the company’s debut at the Dakar Rally in 2011.
Setting an example of reliability at the 2014 Dakar Rally, all eleven MINI ALL4 Racing cars that started the race crossed the finish line in Valparaíso. Of the 11 cars, seven finished in the top ten, including Monster Energy X-raid Team Orlando Terranova/Paulo Fiúza and Krzysztof Holowczyc/Konstantin Zhiltsov who finished 5th and 6th respectively.
The MINI ALl4 Racing is based on the MINI John Cooper Works Countryman.
