This is a very good thing, as nobody who’s shopping the entry-level premium segment wants their vehicle to look like a mainstream compact. By now, you’ve surely developed an opinion on the sharp creases and bold look of modern Acura products, so we’re not going to dwell on its beak-like fascia other than to say it’s been downsized on the ILX and that it mostly blends in with its overall design ethos.

We wouldn’t expect the face of the ILX to deter many buyers if they are happy with what the rest of the car offers, which is not something we could say of some recent Acura designs. A look at the ILX in profile tells you that Acura isn’t backing all the way

2012 Infiniti EX35

2012-Infinti-EX35 We can hardly be blamed for mistaking the EX35 as another member of the faceless CUV horde. From the outside looking in, the five-door presents itself as the awkward duckling of the Infiniti flock. Up front, the EX greets onlookers with a familiar face lifted from the likes of the G37 line. The company’s rounded, chrome-plated grille and wraparound projector headlights help identify the model as a member of the family, but step to the crossover’s side and the story shifts dramatically.

In profile, the EX35 looks both small and somewhat strangely proportioned. With a rear hatch that leans far forward, a C-pillar defined by a sharp upkick and a tallish greenhouse offset by a long nose, the design seems caught somewhere between a baby beluga and a crosstrainer. Pronounced haunches out back hint to the rear-wheel-drive goodness lurking undernearth the rounded wrapper, and the stylish 19-inch split-spoke wheels

2013-Mercedes-Benz-SL550 Before we delve into what makes this $106,375 convertible tick, we can’t avoid the elephant in the garage: styling. The SL’s nose is fussy, with a pair of eagle-eye bi-xenon cornering headlamps and a massive upright grille giving way to the obligatory long hood. We can’t quite put our finger on it, but there’s something aesthetically uncomfortable about the front end’s proportions and multiplicity of lines. The schnoz looks particularly awkward when viewed in profile, as the grille and front fascia stand uncomfortably proud of the swept-back headlamps.

We’re inclined to blame toughening pedestrian crash test standards for all of this, but somehow, other automakers have done a better job. The rest of the bodyside is less controversial, with the SL’s patented long of hood, long of door aesthetic dominated by a U-shaped character line that originates in the front fender’s heat extractors.
